Friends in Christ,
Several Christians in the ELCA have called and asked: “What are we to do?” My answer is the Lutheran answer: “What does the Bible say?”
Over 12 Scriptures admonish believers to come apart from apostasy. Not a single verse in the N.T. encourages believers to have fellowship with apostasy or sexual immorality, in an effort to be a good witness to them.
1 Cor. 5:11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater….
2 Tim 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last times (days) perilous times will come… having a form of godliness, but denying its power. And from such people turn away.
2 Thes. 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.
2Cor. 6:14 – 7:1 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?
Rom. 16:17 Now I urge you brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
Galatians 1:8, 9 If anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. (x 2!)
Rom. 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
1 Tim. 6:20-21 … avoid contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge. By professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.
1Tim 6:3-6 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, … from such withdraw yourself.
2 Tim 2:16, 18 But shun profane and idle babblings… who have strayed from the truth, saying the resurrection is already past; and they overthrew the faith of some.
2 John :10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him.
Eph 5:7, 11 Do not be partakers with them. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
The Bible is clear. Christians are to come apart from apostasy and heretics. Of course some in the ELCA would argue that they are not apostate, and heretic. They speak of a gospel under the gospel and other such clever deceptions that they use to turn away from the clear teaching of God’s Holy Word. Well, no matter what deceptive cleverness you use, when you willfully turn away from God’s Word, you are a heretic, fallen from grace.
Harsh words? Yes, but eternity in Hell (which many liberals deny exists) is harsher still. But God desires that each one repent and believe the good news. Read Jude and find out where you are.
God loves you, yes, so “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God be with you.
Friends in Christ,
